Sydney Bears Ice Hockey

Sydney Bears Ice Hockey Club is one of the largest and most successful recreational ice-hockey clubs in New South Wales. Established in 1982, the Bears are the only remaining founding member of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL), which was formed for the 2000 season. The Sydney Bears will compete with eight other teams in the national league in 2023. Like many sporting clubs around Australia, the club is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who pride themselves in developing the sporting and life skills of their players. However, the battle to keep the club alive has been hard fought.The Bears are based at Macquarie Ice Rink, within the Macquarie Centre, in the northern suburbs of Sydney. When news first broke of the Macquarie Ice Rink’s planned demolition a few years ago, those members, the Macquarie Ice Rink community, the hockey community across Australia, the local community, and many others rallied together to save the rink.Fans came out in force to support the club and the power supporter-base could no longer be ignored. The campaign to save the rink was ultimately successful, with the developer making a commitment to keep the rink alive.
